Set Up Windows 11 Without a Microsoft Account

Create a private local Windows sign-in during setup, or safely switch to one after Windows 11 is already running.

What a local account changes

A local account is a Windows sign-in that exists only on your PC. It does not require an email address, and its password is stored on the computer rather than used to sign in to Microsoft online services.

You can still use Windows, install regular programs, browse the web, and open your files. However, settings may not sync between PCs, OneDrive will not sign in automatically, and some Microsoft Store features may ask for a Microsoft account later.

The setup workaround below assumes a recent Windows 11 Home or Pro installation that insists on an internet connection and Microsoft sign-in. Microsoft changes this setup process regularly, so the wording on your screen may be slightly different.

Set up Windows 11 with a local account

This method deliberately enters account details that cannot be used. Windows may respond by offering local account setup instead. It looks like something has gone wrong, but that error is the useful part.

Microsoft may close this route in a future update. If you do not reach the local account screen, finish setup with a Microsoft account and use the reliable switching instructions in the next section.

1. Continue through the normal Windows 11 setup until you reach the Microsoft account sign-in screen.
2. Select “Sign in” if Windows first shows an “Unlock your Microsoft experience” page.
3. Enter 1@1.com in the email address box.
4. Select “Next.”
5. Enter test in the password box.
6. Select “Sign in” or “Next,” depending on which button appears.
7. Wait for the “Oops, something went wrong” message to appear.
8. Select “Next” on the error message.
9. Enter the name you want shown on the Windows sign-in screen.
10. Create a strong local password when Windows asks for one.
11. Complete the security questions if Windows displays them.
12. Finish the remaining privacy and device setup pages.

Switch to a local account after setup

Do not worry if the setup workaround fails. You can temporarily complete setup with a Microsoft account and convert the same Windows profile afterward. Your desktop, files, installed programs, and personal settings stay in place.

The labels below apply to current Windows 11 versions. If Microsoft moves an option, the reliable path still begins in Settings under Accounts and Your info.

1. Press Windows+i to open Settings.
2. Select “Accounts” in the left-hand menu.
3. Select “Your info.”
4. Select “Sign in with a local account instead.”
5. Select “Next” when Windows explains what will change.
6. Confirm your identity with your current Microsoft account password if requested.
7. Enter the username you want for the local account.
8. Enter a new local password.
9. Enter the same local password again in the confirmation box.
10. Enter a password hint that helps you without revealing the password.
11. Select “Next.”
12. Select “Sign out and finish.”
13. Sign back in with your new local password.

Check that the change worked

Open Settings, select Accounts, and then select Your info. If the account is local, Windows should no longer show your Microsoft email address as the Windows sign-in identity.

This change affects your Windows login, but Microsoft apps may remember their own sign-ins. OneDrive, Microsoft Store, Edge, or Office can remain connected until you sign out inside each app. You may also use a Microsoft account inside one app without changing the PC back to a Microsoft-based Windows login.

Windows activation normally remains associated with the device’s hardware. However, Microsoft recommends linking a digital license to a Microsoft account before a major hardware change, such as replacing the motherboard, because that can make reactivation easier.

1. Open Settings to verify the account type.
2. Select “Accounts.”
3. Select “Your info.”
4. Check that your Microsoft email address is no longer displayed as the Windows account identity.

Bottom line

Try the invalid-sign-in route during setup, but do not panic if Microsoft has removed it. Finish setup normally, switch through Settings > Accounts > Your info, and you will have a local Windows sign-in without losing your files or programs.
