Update Adobe Acrobat Reader on Mac and Verify the Fix

Update Reader, confirm the security patch is installed, and remove the app safely if Apple Preview is all you need.

Why this update matters

A harmful PDF can be more than a bad document. Security flaws in Acrobat Reader have allowed specially prepared PDFs to expose private information or run an attacker’s code. In some cases, simply opening the file may be enough.

The good news is that Adobe has released a fix. The update described by PCWorld on April 14, 2026, is version 26.001.21411. Macs using Acrobat’s separate 2024 release track need version 24.001.30360. A later version in the same track is also protected.

These instructions assume a recent version of macOS. They also work on many older Macs, although the app may be called Adobe Acrobat, Acrobat Reader, or Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. Until you finish, avoid PDFs from unfamiliar senders or unexpected email attachments.

Update Adobe Acrobat Reader

Reader includes its own updater. The Help menu is in the menu bar, which is the thin strip across the very top of your Mac’s screen. Save any PDFs you are working on before you begin.

1. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader from your Applications folder.
2. Click Help in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
3. Click Check for Updates.
4. Wait while the updater checks Adobe’s servers.
5. Click Download and Install if an update is offered.
6. Quit Reader when the updater asks you to close it.
7. Enter your Mac login password if macOS requests permission.
8. Wait for the installation confirmation to appear.
9. Open Adobe Acrobat Reader again.

Check that the security fix installed

If the number is older, run Check for Updates one more time. Some Macs need more than one update when the installed copy is far behind. If Reader still reports an old version, download a fresh installer from Adobe’s official website rather than from a download advertisement or unfamiliar software site.

If the updater says no update is available but the displayed number remains below the patched version, do not open unknown PDFs in Reader. Reinstalling the current Adobe copy is the safer choice.

1. Click the application-name menu immediately to the right of the Apple logo.
2. Choose About Adobe Acrobat or About Adobe Acrobat Reader.
3. Read the version number shown in the small About window.
4. Confirm that the standard release says 26.001.21411 or a later 26.001 version.
5. Confirm that a 2024-track installation says 24.001.30360 or a later 24.001 version.
6. Close the About window.

Remove Reader if you do not need it

The uninstaller’s wording and location vary between Adobe releases, so use it when it is supplied. Moving the app to the Trash is the practical fallback. It may leave small preference files behind, but those files cannot open a PDF or expose you to the Reader vulnerability.

1. Control-click a trusted PDF in Finder.
2. Choose Open With from the shortcut menu.
3. Choose Preview.
4. Confirm that the document displays correctly in Preview.
5. Quit Adobe Acrobat Reader by pressing Command-Q.
6. Open the Applications folder in Finder.
7. Open the Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader folder if one is present.
8. Run the Adobe uninstaller if that folder contains one.
9. Drag the Adobe Acrobat Reader app to the Trash if no uninstaller is included.
10. Empty the Trash after you are certain you no longer need the app.

Bottom line

Update Reader through Help > Check for Updates, then verify version 26.001.21411 or later, or Mac 2024-track version 24.001.30360 or later. If Preview handles your PDFs and you do not need Adobe features, removing Reader closes the door completely.
